Saint Valentine he was born in Terni in 175 AD and, in his early twenties, became the bishop of the city.
Legend has it that one day, the young Roman legionary Sabino fell in love with the beautiful Serapia at first sight: unfortunately the two could not fulfill their dream of love as he was a pagan religion while she was a Christian. Serapia thus suggested to Sabino to ask Bishop Valentino to baptize him, in order to finally be able to marry. The young man did so instantly but, just as the celebrations for the upcoming baptism and the wedding were being prepared, the girl fell ill with consumption, fatally.
It is said that Sabino, taken by desperation, also asked Bishop Valentino to declare them husband and wife: his life without her would in fact have been empty and without any meaning. The bishop, moved by this deep and sincere sentiment, he baptized the boy and enveloped the two loved ones in an eternal sleep, beatifying, uniting the two lovers forever.
From that day on, Bishop Valentino became the Patron saint of lovers to which young couples began to ask for the blessing and to receive a red rose from his flower garden, which the bishop gave to young lovers as a wish for ahappy and joyful union.
