From the Egypt of the pharaohs (2055-1790 BC) to today, glass has always been an indispensable material: if in the most remote past its production was surrounded by an aura of magic and mystery and linked to the creation of precious objects, today we find it , in the most varied forms and uses, in homes all over the world.
WHERE DOES GLASS COME FROM?
Before embarking on the tortuous journey to discover its millenary history, it is interesting to know first of all what is glass and where it is born.
Today glass processing is entrusted to sophisticated machines and cutting-edge technologies, capable of creating increasingly resistant products with the most varied shapes. But, even if the techniques change, the substance is always the same ...
Glass is born from the fusion of silica, or rather of silica sand, at a high temperature - around 1,700 °. At this temperature its consistency is similar to that of liquid honey. If the molten silica sand is cooled rapidly, it crystallizes creating an amorphous solid called an amorphous solid silica glass.
To make silica glass malleable it is necessary to alter its structure with elements dark or modifiers such as sodium, which allow it to be processed at lower temperatures - to be clear, in a plastic stage halfway between silica sand and silica glass, that is, between the liquid and solid states. The creation of glass proper - with specific qualities of color, hardness etc. - involves the presence of other minerals in the melt.
